ImpromptuAI is a new AI-powered sheet music composition tool for iPhone and iPad, created by Dr Matthew Winnel.

Create manuscripts in seconds

Matt has an interesting background spanning both music and science. He studied music and physics at the University of Sydney before completing a PhD in quantum physics at the University of Queensland and going on to work in quantum information research. He has brought these different interests together in ImpromptuAI, combining AI, music engraving and audio technology to create a new approach to generating notated music.

With ImpromptuAI, you create notated music by describing what you want in a text prompt. You can specify instruments, musical style, mood, key and metre, as well as giving more detailed musical instructions. The app then generates an original notated score which you can read and edit on screen, listen to as an audio preview, then download and print.

There’s plenty of scope to experiment. You can create music for different instruments and ensembles, with examples including solo piano, four-part choir, electronic ensembles and contemporary strings. Prompts can range from a fairly broad musical idea to more detailed instructions about the style, instrumentation and character of the piece.

The focus on notation is particularly interesting from a music education perspective. Because the music is presented as both a score and an audio preview, students can explore how a written musical idea has been translated into notation, examine the resulting music, and evaluate the choices made by the AI. It could provide an interesting starting point for composition and arranging, or for discussing what the AI has produced, what works and what you might change.

Generated scores can also be saved and organised within the app, making it easy to return to compositions and continue exploring different ideas.

Try ImpromptuAI for free

There is currently a try-for-free promotion running until 30 September, so if you’re interested in exploring AI-generated notation, this is a good opportunity to give it a go.
